about

In every one of these write-ups, I express the desire to have fewer tracks on each piece and remark about how I seldom succeed.

That was certainly true for most of "The Darkness Is Light Enough." However, when I was mixing the album version of "Icy Branches," I was ready to ditch it because I didn't like the central, loud droning guitar track. When I muted the guitar, the piece sounded entirely different, not at all how I'd intended. Even better, I liked it (I also got a kick deconstructing it even further for this album).

Another thing I don't like about using too many tracks is that you lose a lot of the smaller details in the individual tracks. So much gets lost in the mess.

All of this gave me the idea to do a massively stripped down mix for every piece from the sessions (2 songs here are remixes of outtakes). I know the tendency of remixes is to be more danceable, but here it is more ambient, minimal or restrained.

I really enjoyed this practice and can add this as another creative approach I'd like to take more often.

I'm not the most tech savvy fella, but for some computer related reason I couldn't get the volume lower on the last 2 songs. I'd mix the volumes way down, but when I sent the file out it got even louder. After many adjustments and no improvement, I just gave up.
